Full List of Amazon FBA Warehouse Locations and Sales tax rate by State

Amazon FBA Warehouse Locations

Keeping on top of your inventory and the different sales tax rates associated with each state can be a juggle. There’s nexus to consider, both physical and economic, as well as local sales tax which drives the total state tax rate up.

Of the 50 US states (plus Washington DC), Amazon currently owns and operates fulfilment centres in 27. As an FBA seller, it’s important that you know this because it influences which states you should be collecting sales tax in.

If you have inventory stored in one of Amazon’s fulfilment centres, you’re considered to have a physical nexus in that state, and you’re required to collect and remit sales tax. Also, your stock may be shifted to a different warehouse by Amazon if it means better service for your customers.

To help you stay on top of your sales tax obligations in the US, here is a list of the 27 states with Amazon FBA fulfilment centres – and what each state’s sales tax and local tax rates are.

A few things to note:

  • Most states have a state-wide sales tax and a local sales tax. Combined, they create the total tax rate you need to collect and remit.
  • There are multiple Amazon FBA warehouse locations in most states. This affects local sales tax, which can vary depending on which Amazon warehouse your inventory is stored in.
  • If you make over a certain threshold of sales in a state, you’re also liable for that state’s sales taxes due to economic nexus – have a read of our Amazon and Shopify Tax Guide Series for the US and Canada.

Keeping track with WhereStock

As an Amazon FBA seller in the United States, you have several tax responsibilities. If your inventory is stored in an Amazon FBA warehouse, this creates sales tax nexus. You might only send your inventory to one or two warehouses, but Amazon may shift it to another state if it means faster delivery for your customers, and that could complicate your tax obligations.

WhereStock, an online service that helps Amazon FBA sellers in the US monitor their sales tax obligations, is now available in A2X. Each time your stock is stored in a new state, triggering sales tax nexus, WhereStock records this, providing you with a single, easy-to-read state list report – so you can register, collect and remit the correct sales tax.

If you’re not already using A2X with your accounting software (Xero or QuickBooks Online), have a chat with the experts.
