Rates for in-person credit card fees depend on your plan type:
- Basic Shopify plan = 2.7% per transaction.
- Shopify plan = 2.5% per transaction.
- Advanced Shopify plan = 2.4% per transaction
These rates are related to Shopify Payments, which comes included with a Shopify POS subscription.

At present, Shopify has six bundles available in their store.
- Two variants of the Retail Bundle (for different sized tablets/iPads).
- Two variants of the Start-up Bundle.

- A DYMO eCommerce Kit for printing barcodes and labels and weighing products.
The DYMO kits are good if you do not already have the hardware set up for labeling and shipping your products.
But if you’re just getting started with Shopify POS, the Retail or Start-up packages are a good option for getting set up and ready to go quickly
What is the Shopify Retail package?
The Shopify Retail package is a basic hardware bundle to help you set up your Shopify POS retail store.
- 1 x Chip & Swipe Reader
- 1 x Shopify Retail Stand for iPad
- 1 x Shopify Mounting Kit
The Shopify Retail package costs $159 and can be purchased from Shopify’s hardware store.
What is the Shopify Start-up package?
The Shopify Start-up package includes everything you need to set up and grow your Shopify POS retail store.
- Chip & Swipe Reader
- 1 x Shopify Retail Stand for iPad
- 1 x Shopify Mounting Kit
- 1 x Bluetooth or Wifi or Wired Receipt Scanner (Black/Grey or White/Gray)
- 1 x 14” or 16” Cash Drawer (Black or White)
- 1 x 1D or 2D Barcode Scanner (Black or White)
The Shopify Start-up package begins at $789 and can increase depending on your selections. This bundle can also be purchased from Shopify’s hardware store.
Individual hardware options
As well as the bundles, you can purchase individual Shopify POS hardware products from the store as needed.
Here are the different categories to choose from:
Card readers are available on the Shopify hardware store in the form of a Chip & Swipe reader and a Tap & Chip reader. They also sell docks and cases for the Tap & Chip.
Shopify POS card readers will make it easier and faster for your customers to pay using a debit or credit card.
iPad and tablet stands
Stands for iPads and other tablets can be bought from the Shopify hardware store. They come in a variety of sizes and styles to suit your needs.
Tablets can be used as customer-facing payment screens at your checkout. Stands are perfect for securing your tablet in place and angling it towards the customer.
Barcode scanners and label printers
Shopify POS barcode scanners are sold on the Shopify hardware store, along with scanner cradles, label printers, and barcode labels to help you get fully set up.

Receipt printers and paper
Receipt printers and paper are available from Shopify’s hardware store. Printers come in three types: Bluetooth, Wifi, and Wired.

Cash drawers can be purchased from the Shopify hardware store. There is a 14” and a 16” option.
These can be handy if you need somewhere safe to store your cash.

How To Set Up and Use Shopify POS: Step by Step
As with most Shopify products, setting yourself up with Shopify POS is quick and easy.
Follow these seven steps to get set up with Shopify POS and start selling.
Step 1) Choose your subscription type
Once you’ve got your Shopify POS hardware and are ready to get started, the first thing to do is choose the subscription level best suited to your needs.
If you’re operating Shopify POS from multiple locations, you can select a different subscription type for each store location you are operating from. This will ensure you get the most out of each location.
To do this:
- Open your Shopify admin and go to Point of Sale > Locations.
- Click on Manage subscriptions.
- Choose a subscription for each location and then click Save.
- Finally, click Approve subscription to complete the process.
Step 2) Download and learn the Shopify POS app
Download and install the Shopify POS app to your preferred device(s).
Once installed, log in and configure the basic settings for your account as demonstrated in this video:
Take the time to get to know each of the different screens and functionalities of your Shopify POS app before adding any products.
Step 3) Add and organize your products
You can add products to sell in your store from your Shopify admin, the POS app, or by importing and exporting with CSV files.
From your Shopify admin:
- Open your admin and go to Products > All products.
- Click Add product.
- Enter a title and relevant details for the product
- Finally, set the availability for your product to Point of sale. If you are using the POS app to create a new product, Point of sale will be automatically enabled.
Pro tip: It pays to also add images for each product so that you can browse your products easily within the POS app. You can also create collections to help you organize your products into categories if you have a large number of different items.
Step 4) Configure your taxes
When using Shopify POS, you’ll need to charge sales taxes based on your store location (the location of your POS device).
First, set your store’s location in your Shopify admin. Make sure that the new location is also included in your shipping zones.
- From Shopify admin, go to Settings > Taxes.
- In the section called Tax rates, select the appropriate tax region and set the tax rate. Click Save.
- If you’re in the US, choose automatic tax settings. You can also manually specify the rates for your part of the US, including shipping taxes.
- If you’re not in the US, specify your country and region rates or use the default value.
- Add the location of your store and assign your Shopify POS device to this location.
Step 5) Set up a payment provider
A payment provider will allow you to accept payments securely.
You may choose to use Shopify Payments – Shopify’s built-in payment provider. This will allow you to avoid paying additional transaction fees and view your payouts within your Shopify admin.
NB: To use a third-party payment provider, you must have a Shopify plan or higher subscription level.
Step 6) Set up your hardware
If you bought one of the Shopify hardware bundles or any of the individual hardware items available on the Shopify hardware store, you will have received setup instructions with your package.
In case you misplaced or did not receive the instructions, Shopify has created a downloadable pdf with instructions for setting up the iPad stand, card reader, receipt printer, and cash drawer.
If you are using non-Shopify hardware for your store, consult the instruction manual that came with it or speak to the manufacturer for advice.
Step 7) Run a few tests
Once your app, hardware, and systems are all set up and ready to go, you’ll want to run some tests.
Testing is essential before actually using your new Shopify POS operations. You don’t want to find out something isn’t working midway through a real sale.
Try testing for a few different transaction types, such as:
- Taking a partial payment.
- Refunding a customer’s order.
- Marking a completed order as “fulfilled”.
- Updating an order.
Be sure to familiarize yourself with all the ins and outs of your new software and hardware so that you feel confident to handle any scenario when your shop goes live.
